WIDESPREAD-03-2018: Twinning


This specific challenge is to enhance networking activities between the research institutions of the Widening countries and internationally-leading counterparts at EU level. Driven by the quest for excellence, research-intensive institutions tend to collaborate increasingly in closed groups, producing a crowding-out effect for a large number of promising institutions.

Twinning aims at significantly strengthening a defined field of research in a university or research organisation from a Widening country by linking it with at least two internationally-leading research institutions from two different Member States or Associated Countries.

One of the key disciplines of Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) are geospatial sciences (represented by Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics – IGG). Currently 8 competitive projects are run in the Institute, however, most of the projects are related to one research field: Global Navigation Satellite System. To further develop IGG needs to embark on a new area of expertise multi-technique ground deformations and seismicity monitoring.

Current challenges in the field are related to the deformation rate and scale, a non-linear character of terrain movements, seismic magnitude, differentiation between the sources of surface deformations, require an enhancement of the methodological approaches as well as substantial expertise in the interpretation of the results.

The overall objective of the project is a further development of the geospatial sciences to enlarge the number of research-intensive sections at IGG, foster development of leaders, finally to establish strong networks with the best Universities in Europe to form competitive research applications in H2020. WUELS’ IGG ambition is to be amongst the top geospatial sciences research institutions over the next three years, to become one of the leading centres of excellence in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).

OBJECTIVES

Raising the research staff competence in the field of monitoring of anthropogenic ground surface deformation and risk due to induced seismicity, by improvement and extension of the methodological background of three advanced geodetic techniques used in this project for terrain deformation observations, namely radar remote sensing (InSAR), laser scanning (LiDAR) and GNSS (GNSSseismology).

Stimulating and increasing the UPWr step up in scientific excellence and technological innovation capacity by enhancement of the model of the ground deformations in term of geodynamic and geophysical processes, as well as making a link between the geodetic data, models and the impact into the citizens and hazards in the area of interest.

Improving the capability to succeed in other competitive research funding streams.
